If you are planning Kedarnath Yatra for the first time, or thinking of taking your family / parents, then confusion is normal.
• How to go?
• How tough is the trek?
• What is the total Kedarnath trek distance?
• How does helicopter booking work?
• What is the best time to visit Kedarnath?
• Is registration compulsory or not?
Google has thousands of articles, but they are either too “devotional mode” or just copy-paste info. Here we will talk about practical, on-ground things, so your Kedarnath Yatra doesn’t feel like fiction but actually manageable.
Kedarnath Temple Basics – Where It Is, What Height, What Importance
Kedarnath Temple is in Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, near the origin of river Mandakini, at approx 3580–3600 meters altitude.
It is one of the Char Dhams and is also counted among the 12 Jyotirlingas.
Straight point –
this is not just a tourist spot, but one of India’s most powerful spiritual circuits.
The temple remains open only 6–7 months (approx late April / early May to October / early November).
The rest of the time the entire region stays snow-packed, and Baba’s doli is shifted downwards in winter.
Best Time to Visit Kedarnath – Crowd vs Safety vs Weather
People mostly search: “best time to visit Kedarnath”.
Reality is simple:
• May–June
- Yatra peak season, weather stable, snow mostly melted.
- Day temperature 10–18°C, night extremely cold (around 5°C).
- Heavy crowd, long queues.
• September–October
- Post-monsoon, green + crisp views, clear skies.
- Lesser crowd, darshan easier.
- Cold increases especially after October.
• July–August (Monsoon)
- Landslide risk, roadblocks, cloudburst chances – honestly better to avoid.
If you are with family, seniors, or are a first-timer →
May–June / September = best balance of weather + safety + crowd.
Kedarnath Opening & Closing – Not the Same Date Every Year
Every year Kedarnath opening date is different. Usually:
• Temple opens around Akshaya Tritiya / late April or early May.
• Closes around Bhai Dooj / early November.
For example, in 2025 the Kedarnath Yatra started on 2 May and registration opened from 20 March.
Whenever you plan, check the official update here:
• Badrinath–Kedarnath Temple Committee: badrinath-kedarnath.gov.in
• District Rudraprayag official site – Kedarnath Yatra section
Kedarnath Yatra Registration – It Is Compulsory, Not Optional
If you ignore this, you will be stopped at the first checkpost.
Where to register?
Government’s official portal:
• registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in
Here Char Dham & Kedarnath Yatra registration happens.
As per 2026 information:

These basic details you must always carry whenever you travel anywhere — especially long treks and unknown places.
Online vs Offline Registration
• Online: Portal / App. You receive a QR code which is scanned on route.
• Offline: Counters in Haridwar, Rishikesh, Sonprayag — but avoid last-moment rush.
Digital era me online registration is the best option — I will say this clearly.
Short point –
Registration is mandatory. Don’t assume entry without it.
How to Reach Kedarnath
Road goes only till Gaurikund. After that only trek or helicopter.
Step 1: Delhi → Haridwar / Rishikesh
• By train – multiple options
• By bus – overnight Volvo / govt buses
• By flight – Dehradun (Jolly Grant), then road
Step 2: Haridwar / Rishikesh → Sonprayag → Gaurikund
• Shared jeeps / buses / private cabs
• Route: Rishikesh – Devprayag – Srinagar – Rudraprayag – Guptkashi – Sonprayag
• Private vehicles not allowed beyond Sonprayag; from there take the local shuttle to Gaurikund.
Gaurikund = Kedarnath trek starting point.

Kedarnath Trek Guide – Distance, Difficulty, Time
Distance: Gaurikund to Kedarnath
• Approx 16 km one way (new route).
• Altitude gain is steep, so distance feels heavier.
Trek Time
• Usually 6–8 hours depending on:
– Fitness
– Weather
– Number of breaks
• Night trekking is not allowed.
• Cut-off for climbing is approx 5 PM.
When we went there, we completed this trek in 7 hours.
Difficulty Level
Officially “moderate”, but:
• For seniors, heart patients, asthma patients → tough.
I will clearly say — if you have any such medical issue, avoid this trek.
Sudden altitude gain may cause AMS — headache, nausea, fatigue.
Trek Options
• Walking
• Horse / mule
• Kandi / pithu (for luggage or elderly)
Multiple halts available — food, tea, water, basic medical help.

Kedarnath Helicopter Booking – Avoid Scams, Use Only Official Site
If you search “Kedarnath helicopter booking”, you’ll find 50 fake sites.
Fraud is extremely high, govt recently blocked 100+ fake portals.
Official Helicopter Booking Site
• heliyatra.irctc.co.in — IRCTC HeliYatra portal
Important Points:
• Kedarnath registration FIRST → helicopter booking SECOND.
• Without Yatra registration, heli booking impossible.
• Avoid fake agents/websites — cyber fraud very active.

Helicopter Route & Timing
• Helipads: Guptkashi, Phata, Sirsi
• Options: 1-day / same-day return / next-day return
• Bad weather = cancellations (especially monsoon)
Some accidents have happened in previous years, after which safety norms have tightened. In monsoon, operations may even stop.
Meaning —
Helicopter is comfort, not guarantee.
Always keep backup plan (trek).
Hotels & Stay in Kedarnath, Gaurikund, Sonprayag

Let’s be honest:
Perfect for:
• People who feel spiritual pull
• Those who want the trek + temple combination experience
• People who can tolerate a bit of hardship for a meaningful outcome
Not Ideal (without serious planning):
• Unfit people who cannot even walk 500m
