Kamru Village (Kamru Village Kinnaur), situated in the beautiful Sangla Valley of Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh, is one of those places where after reaching, you do not just see a tourist destination, but a living history. This place comes among those rare locations where every stone, every wooden house and every path tells a story.

As soon as you move from Sangla towards Kamru, the mountains seen on the way, the Baspa river flowing below and the Kamru Fort visible from a distance slowly take you into a completely different world. There is a peace in the air here, which feels completely different from the hustle of cities.

Kamru village is not only known for its natural beauty, but its real identity is its history, religious importance and traditional lifestyle. This is the same place which is considered the first capital of the Bushahr princely state and from where at one time the entire region was governed.

If you are a person who does not just want to travel, but wants to understand a place its story, its beliefs and its culture then Kamru village is a perfect destination for you. After coming here, you realize that Himachal is not limited only to mountains, but its culture and faith are its real strength.

2. History and Facts – Historical Importance of Kamru Village

The history of Kamru village is deeply connected with the history of Kinnaur and the Bushahr princely state. This village was once the center of political and administrative activities of the entire region. According to local people and available historical sources, Kamru is considered the first capital of the Bushahr princely state.

How did the name Kamru come?

According to local priests, the old name of this village was “Mone”. Later when Goddess Kamakhya was established here, then the name of this place was changed to “Kamru”. This change was not just a change of name, but was an important phase connected with the religious identity of this place.

History Of Kamru Fort – A Witness of 1000 Years

Kamru Fort is the biggest identity of this village. This fort is not only a historical structure, but also a living proof of the governance system and traditions of that time.

  • Its estimated age is considered to be more than 1000–1100 years
  • It is counted among the oldest forts of Himachal Pradesh
  • It was the first and main fort of the Bushahr princely state

The coronation of Bushahr kings used to take place in this fort. Only after the coronation here, a king was considered a complete ruler.

Tradition of 121 Kings In Kamru fort

According to local traditions:

  • A total of 121 kings are considered to be associated with Kamru Fort
  • Pradyumna Singh is said to be the first king whose coronation took place here

After this, many rulers such as Shamsher Singh, Baldev Singh, Padam Singh and Virbhadra Singh continued this tradition.

A Unique Condition

One very interesting tradition associated with Kamru Fort is that if a new king did not come to Kamru within six months of his coronation and present himself before his Ishta Devta, then his coronation was considered incomplete.

This tradition shows that at that time governance was not based only on political power, but religious approval was equally important.

Transfer of Capital

With time, the capital of the Bushahr princely state was shifted from Kamru to Sarahan and later to Rampur. Although administrative activities moved to other places, the religious and cultural importance of Kamru never decreased.

Even today this fort is a witness of that glorious history and shows a glimpse of that time to every person who comes here.

3. Mythology & Spiritual Significance Of Kamru Village

Kamru village is not limited only to history, but this place is also connected with deep religious beliefs and mythological stories. The most special thing here is that religion is not limited only to temples, but it is a part of the daily life of the people.

Residence of Narayan Ji

According to local beliefs, Lord Shri Badri Vishal (Narayan Ji) came to Kamru in Satyug from Badrinath Dham via Tibet and Chitkul. After this, he made this place his permanent residence.

Here Narayan Ji is not considered just a deity installed in a temple, but is considered the main deity of the entire Kinnaur and Bushahr region. His decisions and blessings still play an important role in social and religious works.

Worship in Three Forms

In Kamru village, Narayan Ji is worshipped in three different forms. Among these, the “Ashtapuri” form is considered the most important, whose darshan happens only once in a year especially during the Faguli festival.

From Makar Sankranti till April, the deity is considered “hidden”, and his reappearance during Navratras is a special religious event.

Festivals and Religious Traditions

The festivals held in Kamru are not just celebrations, but a part of the entire cultural identity.

  • Faguli
  • Bishu
  • Phulach
  • Mahasuraj

Even the beginning of Holi starts from here when the Ashtapuri form of Narayan Ji is bathed and worshipped, after which the sequence of the festival starts in the entire Kinnaur.

Religious rules in Kamru village are very strict. Purity is considered extremely important for entry into the religious places here.

  • Wearing traditional attire such as Kinnauri cap and waistband is necessary

These rules are not only for religious discipline, but also to maintain the cultural identity of this place.

Mythological Story About Kamru – Connection with Krishna Lineage

According to some folk beliefs, the Bushahr princely state was established by Pradyumna, the son of Lord Shri Krishna. It is also said that Pradyumna came to this region for the marriage of his son Aniruddha.

Aniruddha was married to Usha (daughter of Banasura), and with this story it is believed that a new kingdom began in this region, which later came to be known as the Bushahr princely state.

⚠️ Note:
This story is mainly based on mythological and folk beliefs, and solid historical evidence for all its aspects is not available.

4. Architecture & Spiritual Significance – Structure of Kamru Fort and Religious Importance

Kamru Fort is not just an old building… rather it is an excellent example of Himachal’s traditional architecture and spiritual thinking. When you see this fort from the front, the first thing that attracts attention is its unique structure. which is completely made of wood and stone.

This fort is built in Kath-Kuni architecture, which is the traditional construction style of the hilly regions of Himachal. In this technique, wood and stone are interlocked in a special way, due to which the building not only becomes strong, but also remains safe during natural disasters like earthquakes. This is the reason that despite being hundreds of years old, this fort still stands strong today.

The structure of the fort is tower-style meaning it is built upwards in multiple floors. Each floor had its own different importance and use. In earlier times, this fort was not only a place for kings to live, but it was also a center of administration, security and religious activities.

Kamakhya Devi Temple – The Spiritual Center of the Kamru Fort

The Kamakhya Devi Temple located inside Kamru Fort is the center of spiritual energy of this entire place. This temple is not just a religious site, but a symbol of faith of the entire region.

According to local belief, the idol of Kamakhya Devi was brought here from the famous Kamakhya Temple of Assam. Because of this, the name of this place also became “Kamru”. This connection makes this place even more special, because it connects the religious traditions of North India and Northeast India.

Residence of 33 Crore Deities

It is said about Kamru village that 33 crore deities reside here. Therefore, the religious traditions here are very strict and disciplined.

10. Our Experience at Kamru Village – My Experience

We reached Kamru village at a time when the atmosphere of Sangla Holi was going on in Sangla Valley. During that time, a completely different energy and enthusiasm was visible in the entire area, and in between that, we decided to explore Kamru village without any hurry, comfortably in a full day.

From Sangla, Kamru village looks very beautiful even from a distance. Honestly, it feels as if this village is standing on a high stone cliff… completely different and special in itself. As we moved closer to the village, small gardens, traditional houses and the lovely people there kept meeting us on the way. At that moment, it was clearly felt that this place is not just to see, but to understand.

We slowly started climbing towards the fort. The path was short, but with every step, the excitement was increasing. After reaching the top, we spent the whole day there saw the fort, spent time in the temple and most importantly, took deep information about the entire area from the priest there.

By talking to him, we not only understood the history, but also felt that the people here still follow their traditions with how much honesty.

In the evening, we left towards our stay, which was in Rakcham. But when we reached there, we found out that we had forgotten a very expensive gadget in Kamru and that too at a place which was completely public.

At that time, there was really a little panic but we immediately decided to go back and after about 4 hours we again reached the same place. And what happened there… was probably the most memorable part of this whole trip.

Our gadget was kept exactly there…
just as we had left it.

No one picked it up, no one touched it. At that moment, we realized that the people of Kinnaur are not only known for their culture, but also for their honesty and simplicity.

Many people must have passed through that place, but no one even touched it this is something that is very rarely seen in today’s time.

👉 Honestly,
this experience of Kamru village was not just a travel memory, but a lesson —
that even today there are some places where humanity and trust are alive.
